Skim Coating

Smooth finish over old plaster

The most common plastering job we do — a fresh skim coat over existing plaster to give you a flawlessly smooth wall, ready for paint. Old, knocked-about walls with cracks, patched repairs and decades of wallpaper get one or two coats of fresh finish plaster trowelled on, polished smooth, and left to dry. About 7-10 days later you've got a wall that paints beautifully and looks brand new.

  • Single rooms or whole-house re-skims
  • Repairs to cracked or patched plaster first
  • Two-coat finish where the existing surface is rough
  • PVA sealing on chalky or absorbent surfaces
  • Dust-controlled with sheet protection on floors and furniture

Lime Plastering

Period property and listed buildings

Bath, Frome, Wells and the wider Mendip area have a lot of period stone properties — and on those, modern gypsum plaster is the wrong material. Lime plaster lets the wall breathe, prevents damp building up behind the surface, and is what conservation officers usually require on listed buildings. We work with hot-mix lime, putty lime and pre-mixed natural hydraulic lime depending on what the building needs.

  • Listed building and conservation-area work
  • Lime putty and natural hydraulic lime (NHL)
  • Lath and plaster ceiling repairs
  • Lime render on stone and cob walls
  • Compatible with original wall fabric — no sealing in damp

External Rendering

Pebbledash, modern silicone and lime renders

Render that's cracked, blown or just looks tired. We strip back to substrate where needed, repair underneath, and apply fresh render in whichever system suits the property — traditional sand-and-cement, modern through-coloured silicone, or breathable lime render on older stone. Coloured silicone systems mean no painting needed for 15+ years, just a clean down every few years.

  • Full strip and re-render or patch repairs
  • Pebbledash (knockdown, scraped, or smooth finish)
  • Through-coloured silicone render systems
  • Lime render on stone, cob and period walls
  • Crack repair and damp-related render failures

Ceiling Plastering & Repair

Cracks, water damage and full ceiling replacement

Ceilings are the trickiest part of a plasterer's day — overhead work, gravity working against you, and any imperfection shows up the moment a light goes on. We handle everything from a quick patch around a new ceiling rose to full lath-and-plaster replacement after water damage. We always check the joists and any insulation above before we start, because a ceiling that's bowing or sagging doesn't fix with plaster alone.

  • Crack repairs and patch plastering
  • Full ceiling replacement (lath and plaster or boarded)
  • Water damage and leak repair
  • Removing artex and re-skimming smooth
  • Ceiling rose and cornice work

Dot-and-Dab Plasterboarding

Dry-lining for fresh walls and insulation upgrades

When the existing wall is too far gone to skim — or you're upgrading insulation behind it — fresh plasterboard is faster, drier and warmer than re-plastering from scratch. We dot-and-dab plasterboard onto masonry walls (with insulated boards if needed) or screw-fix to timber-stud partitions. Then we tape, joint, and skim to a smooth finish ready for paint.

  • Dot-and-dab board on masonry walls
  • Insulated thermal board upgrades
  • Stud partition walls — building from scratch or moving existing
  • Tape and joint finishing
  • Full skim coat over the new board

Came round next day for a quote, started the following week. Three rooms re-skimmed in a day and a half, hoovered up and gone. Could not fault them.

Old plaster coming off the wall in the front room. They patched it, scrim'd the joins and skim'd the lot. Two weeks on you can't tell where the old stops and new starts.
